The tribological properties of monolayer KCl films on iron in ultrahigh vacuum: Modeling the extreme-pressure lubricating interface

چکیده
The friction coefficients of thin KCl films deposited onto clean iron in ultrahigh vacuum are measured using a tungsten carbide tip. A rapid decrease is found in the friction coefficient from 2 for clean iron to 0:27 0:03 after the deposition of 40 A of KCl. Based on previous contact resistance measurements, this was proposed to be due to the completion of the first layer of KCl. The firstlayer KCl coverage was measured by adsorbing deuterium onto an iron surface partially covered by KCl, where deuterium selectively adsorbs onto the iron. This revealed that the first monolayer is complete after the deposition of 40 A of KCl and that the first-layer KCl film coverage ð1Þ KCl is given by ð1Þ KCl 1⁄4 1 expð 0:39 0:02tÞ, where t is the film thickness. XPS data suggest that heating a KCl film to 550K causes it to wet the surface. This leads to decreases in the friction coefficients for thin KCl films in accord with the idea that friction is reduced by the first monolayer of KCl on iron. Temperature-programmed desorption data indicate that KCl in the first monolayer is 5 kJ/mol more stable than the multilayer consistent with the wetting behavior. Finally, the kinetic data are analyzed to suggest that the first-layer film is 2.6 A thick.

The surface and tribological chemistry of chlorine- and sulfur- containing lubricant additives
A model for the operation of chlorinated hydrocarbon extreme-pressure additives is outlined in which the chlorinated hydrocarbon thermally decomposes at the hot (~1000 K) interface forming a chloride + carbon film, which is simultaneously worn from the surface. Assuming that seizure occurs when the chloride film thickness decreases to zero reproduces the experimentally measured seizure load vs....

It is demonstrated that the surface chemistry of simple-model extreme-pressure lubricant additives, measured in ultrahigh vacuum, corresponds to that measured at higher pressures, where film growth rates are monitored using a microbalance. This chemistry and reaction kinetics are used to explain the extreme-pressure lubrication behavior by successfully modeling the measured seizure load vs. add...
متن کاملThe friction, mobility and transfer of tribological films: potassium chloride and ferrous chloride on iron
The tribological properties of FeCl2, measured using an ultrahigh vacuum tribometer, are compared with those of KCl. The friction coefficient of an FeCl2 film evaporated onto iron in ultrahigh vacuum decreases to ∼0.08 after the deposition of a film ∼40 Å thick. This value is in good agreement with that measured for reactively formed FeCl2 films in a pin and v-block apparatus. The contact resis...

The tribological properties of halide films grown on iron by reaction with carbon tetrachloride vapor at a temperature of 617 K and a pressure of 1.7 Torr are compared, in ultrahigh vacuum, with FeCl2 films evaporated onto the surface. It is found that the reactively formed film has a slightly lower limiting friction coefficient than the evaporated layer ( 0.06 compared to 0.08), which may be d...
